The Oldest Christmas Market in Helsinki
The Helsinki Christmas market at the Senate Square is a seasonal favourite. It has the distinction of being the oldest and largest annual Christmas market in Helsinki.
With the long dark days of the winter months at their peak, the cosy yet festive atmosphere of the bustling market is a welcome respite to visitors and locals alike.
On arrival, one is greeted by the sound of traditional Christmas carols and the quiet hum of the crowds strolling between the market stalls. The market is overlooked by the Helsinki Cathedral, an impressive landmark building in the neo-classical style.
Hundreds of Stalls
Senate Square is located close to the sea, so it is advisable to dress warmly. And if a scarf or hat is in need, not to worry! Every year there are over a hundred stalls, with an endless array of beautifully-crafted artisanal items, warm apparel in traditional Scandinavian style and an extensive range of Finnish products and delicacies.
Warm glögi (a type of mulled wine, available with or without alcohol) is a must, and at the food yard, the choices are extensive, such as reindeer and other smoked meats and fish, traditional Finnish pies, and jams and preserves made from local berries.
