Capperi Restaurant specialises in Neopolitan pizza, one of the first (and still one of just a handful) in Helsinki who serve pizza in the traditional style of Naples.
Neopolitan pizza is characterised by a thin and somewhat moist crust typically laden with luscious toppings like creamy mozzarella and tomatoes from the San Marzano area next to Mount Vesuvius.
From Naples to the Nordics
As Capperi’s Miguel Papaianni explained to us, careful attention is paid to every ingredient that ends up on one of their pizzas. Every ingredient, from the salt and flour of the dough to the mozzarella and tomatoes that top it off, is traced from origin to end.
Capperi’s cooking process is also traditional. Starting with a pizza base that is made using 100% Italian stone milled flour (which is high in fiber and protein), the pizza is then put into a specialty oven that cooks it in under a minute.
Unlike other pizzas typically found in Finland, many of the toppings are added afterwards, ensuring that the rich flavours of each ingredient used are not lost. There is minimal blending of tastes – instead, each unique aroma and flavour remains distinct.
Seasonal Menus and Old Favorites
Classics like the Margherita and the Marinara form the core of Capperi’s menu, and alongside these are variations that are primarily the creation of Papaianni.
These include seasonal variations that have spawned a number of favorites, such as the popular lemon pizza. With mozzarella, shrimp and cold-smoked salmon and Sorrentine lemons, you can find this pizza on the menu during the summer. In the fall you can look forward to the return of the Monti to the menu with boar sausage and fresh mushrooms.
Delicious Desserts
While pizza is the star at Capperi, the menu also includes classics like cannoli (the Sicilian pastry made famous by the movie The Godfather) that is created from a recipe belonging to Miguel’s grandmother. Fresh sodas and gelato are also hand-made from organic ingredients.
Babà, a soft, golden pastry dessert soaked in rum sauce, was introduced this summer at Capperi. It is said that babà, which is of Polish origin, was a favorite of Napoleon’s brother, who brought his Polish chef along with him when he became King of Naples and Sicily.

Buon appetito!
Fun fact: The original Margherita pizza was the creation of Rafael Esposito, a baker who created the dish in honour of Queen Margherita of Savoy when she visited Naples in 1889. His choice of toppings was based on the colors of the Italian flag – red tomatoes, white mozzarella and green basil.
