Seurasaari island is an easily accessible spot for outdoor relaxation in Helsinki which can be enjoyed in all seasons, winter being no exception.  Here you can reconnect with nature, enjoy the benefits of winter walking or learn more about Finland’s folk history, all at once.

Easy Access

Although the open-air museum is closed in the winter, Seurasaari island itself is always open for exploration. Bus no. 24 takes you directly there from the city center. If you are so inclined, walking is also possible. It is around 5 to 6 kms from Kamppi.  Bikes are not allowed on the island, so remember to leave it in the designated parking area.

Walking Trails

The forested island is crisscrossed with trails and is as popular with the locals as with the tourists, who enjoy its rural atmosphere despite being so close to the heart of the city.  In the off-season, while the museum is closed, it is particularly peaceful and an ideal spot to enjoy the magic of Finnish winter.

When walking in Seurasaari in the winter, remember to be mindful of ice on the ground. Fresh snowfall can hide the condition of the path below. Although the paths are usually gritted, it is always wise to use caution to avoid falls.

Open-air Historical Display

Visitors can see the historic wooden buildings on the eastern side of the island. All of these building were relocated from elsewhere in Finland and are representative of Finnish peasant life from past centuries.  Touring the interior of the buildings is possible when the museum is open from May to September.

There are cafes located on the island, as well as an outdoor fireplace, where you can bring your own sausages for grilling and numerous benches along the trail for anyone wishing to pause and take in the picturesque views.
