Lux Helsinki 2020, Helsinki’s very popular annual light-art festival, opens tomorrow (January 4, 2020) along a brand new route in central Helsinki.

Lux Helsinki 2020 – Official Route

Installations along this year’s route will be open to the public daily from 5 pm to 10 pm. The five-day festival features nine installations along the official route. A wide range of light-art will be displayed along the approximately kilometre long route at both well-known and less familiar locations.

The route follows a structured order, with the first installation at the Helsinki Cathedral in Senate Square.  The route continues from there on to Kaisaniemi Park and ends in Tokoinranta park at the Helsinki City Theatre, which is this year’s featured work of architecture.

In keeping with the theme of nature, which is central to many of this year’s light exhibits, the building’s facade will be transformed into a beautiful landscape. The light installation at the theatre, which was created by designer Eero Helle, is meant to bring to mind the incredible beauty of nature.

Satellite Installations

Besides the main installations on the official route, there are six satellite installations off-route. These installations can be found at locations both near the official route as well as outside of central Helsinki, including the Cultural Centre Stoa in Eastern Helsinki as well as at Hanasaari, Espoo.

The festival is already ongoing at the Korkeasaari Zoo, where the light-art installations draw attention to and raise funds for the conservation of the endangered snow leopards. (Open today (3.1) from 10 am – 18 pm and 4.1 – 8.1.2020 from 10 am – 8 pm.)

More detailed information about the programme can be found here.

In keeping with the festival’s central theme of nature and environmental consciousness, carbon offsetting will be carried out with the help of the Finnish Compensate foundation, primarily through the planting of trees that will effectively offset more carbon emissions than the event is estimated to produce.

Lux Helsinki 2020 is organised by the Helsinki Events Foundation, with technical production by Sun Effects. In addition to the light art installations there are a number of related events (such as Lux Helsinki Eat) happening throughout the city.  For more information, click here to go to Lux Helsinki’s official website.

The festival is open 4.1 – 8.1.2020.
