The Baltic Herring Market has made its annual return to the Helsinki Market Square. The Herring market has been ongoing every autumn since 1743 and is the oldest traditional event in Finland.
Not just a fish market
Given the name, you might believe that the Herring Market is simply a large fish market, but this is not the case. While it originally began as a marketplace for fishermen to ply their trade, it has grown into a much more expansive event at which visitors can delight in the many rich flavors of the archipelago.
Of course, this includes a wide range of delicious fish products, which are sold under the brightly colored orange stalls or directly off the fishermen’s boats. In particular, you can find a wide range of salted and marinated herring products, made with the individual sellers’ secret marinades and dressings.
The expansion of the market means that that now you can also find a wide assortment of fresh berries and preserves, mushrooms and other local produce. You can also sample the tasty local dishes that can be eaten right there at the atmospheric harbour market.
Alongside all the food products, there are also many vendors selling handmade crafts and artisan items, as well as warm clothing in traditional Scandinavian style.
Traditional Sailing Ships are coming to the Herring Market
Five traditional sailing vessels will be moored at the harbor throughout the week, and visitors are welcome to go on board during market hours.
Finland’s tall ships arrive at the harbor on Saturday, October 12th and begin docking around 4 p.m. If you would like to step on board and explore the ships, you can do so on Sunday, October 13th between 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.
